Early Life and Discoveries

Cherine Tanya Anderson was born on September 25, 1984, in Rockfort, East Kingston, Jamaica. She is the daughter of Derryck and Barbara Anderson, who ensured that Cherine and her sisters remained engaged in church activities. This early involvement in church is where Cherine’s musical talents were first recognized. Reflecting on her beginnings, she shared, “It wasn’t so much the message in the church songs that appealed to me at first…it was the passion and strength of peoples’ voices.”

At the age of 12, Cherine began formal training in music, dance, and theatre with the Ashe Performing Arts Ensemble. It is one of the Caribbean’s most successful performance companies.

Transition to Film

Cherine Anderson’s professional career took off when she was just 14 years old. She starred in “Dancehall Queen,” one of Jamaica’s most acclaimed films. Her love for both singing and acting was further realized when she starred in the 2003 film “One Love.” Cherine not only acted but also contributed two songs to the film’s soundtrack. For her performance, she earned the MTV2/Urbanworld Film Festival Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film. Her acting career continued as she starred in MTV Tempo’s interactive drama “Choices” in 2007.
